Robert Froggatt (1850-1927)

Robert was the youngest child of James FROGGATT and Mercy COLDWELL (or COWGILL). His life story is told here.

Robert FROGGATT

According to the 1851 census, Robert was born in Wath upon Deane, Yorkshire. Wath is a small town to the northwest of Rotherham, close to Swinton and Newhill. The birth was registered at Rotherham in the September quarter 1850. Robert is with his parents James and Martha at Rose Hill in 1851, Lane Head Rawmarsh in 1861. In the 1871 census Robert is a lodger with Thomas Parkinson at Brightside Bierlow where he is a crane driver at the iron works.

Robert Married Martha YELLAND on 28 December 1875 at the parish church at Swinton, Rotherham, Yorkshire.

St Margaret Church, Swinton (from church website). The present church was built in 1899 after its predecessor was destroyed by fire in 1897. The present church incorporates Kauri beams from New Zealand.

In the 1881 census Robert and Martha were living at 50 Crossland st, Swinton, where Robert was a Collery Engine Man. At this time they had Robert's widowed mother living with them. In 1891 they were at the same address but now they had Robert's widowed sister (Elizabeth WHITE) and her two children with them.

Martha (YELLAND) died in 1889 and was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 15 September 1889:

In 1891 Robert was a widow, still at 50 Crossland St.

Robert remarried two years later to Hannah HAYWOOD (nee HEWSON) a widow, on 29 November 1892 at Swinton St Margaret. Robert still resided at 50 Crossland St, Swinton.

In 1901 and 1911 Robert and Hannah were living at 134 Whitelee Rd, Swinton. Today this address is a derelict industrial site.

Hannah died in 1912 and was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 3 December 1912.
Robert died a few years later, in 1927 and was buried in the same plot as Hannah st Swinton St Margaret, on 10 March 1927. Robert left a Will, that was proved on 12 May 1927. He left £551/9/11 in his estate, with his daughter Edith Annie (BARBER) the executrix.

Elizabeth Ann FROGGATT 1876- ?

Elizabeth Ann FROGGATT was born 28 December 1876 to Robert and Martha FROGGATT and was baptised at Wath upon Dearne on 4 February 1877.

In the 1881 census she is aged 4 and living with Robert and Martha. In the 1891 census she is aged 14 and with her grandmother Ann MAWSON (née YELLAND) at 3 Church St, Swinton.

Elizabeth Ann married Charles Mitchell YOUNG on 3 November 1896 at the Parish Church of Swinton. Her age is given as 20, but she was only 19 years and 11 months. The witness, John MAWSON, was her step-grandfather, whom she had been living with at the time of the 1891 census.

After 1911 the family is difficult to find in the records. Charles Mitchell YOUNG appears to have died in 1933 (Mar 1933 Rotherham 9c/1093).
Their daughter Hilda May YOUNG died in early 1904 aged 2 years.
Their son Ernest Mitchell YOUNG died on 4 June 1913 at 71 Fitzwilliam St, Swinton.
Christana YOUNG is recorded in the 1911 census but after that seems to vanish, and
Evelyn YOUNG is recorded in the 1939 register at Wath Wood Hospital, working as a sick nurse.
Elizabeth Ann YOUNG appears to have died in 1944 (1944 Dec quarter Rother Valley 9c/720).

Beatrice Alice FROGGATT

Beatrice was born 31 August 1879 to Robert and Martha FROGGATT. She was baptised 5 October 1879 at Swinton. Beatrice is recored in the 1881 census living with Robert and Martha

Beatrice Alice died shortly after giving birth to Beatrice Martha (Sep Quarter 1911 Spalding 7a/436). She was aged 31 years.

What happened to William the widower? One possibility - he married Amy WILSON in Spalding in late 1912 and they had several children. William appears to have died in Spalding in 1946 (Spalding Sep quarter 3b/45).

John Alfred FROGGATT

John Alfred was born to Robert & Martha on 25 June 1882 and was baptised at Swinton on 30 June 1882. He is listed in the 1891 and 1901 census records:

John Alfred married Ann FURNISS on 1 March 1906 at St Margaret's Swinton. The witness was Edith Annie FROGGATT, John's younger sister.
