THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF ROTHERHAM, YORKSHIREThe YELLAND Family Part 2This page traces the fortunes of the YELLAND family starting with John YELLAND born 1811 in Far Dalton, Rotherham Yorkshire. John was the youngest son of Joseph YELLAND and Elizabeth JISSOP. The family history of John's siblings and earlier generations of the YELLAND family Part 1 can be seen here. You can read through this page, following the links back to the YELLAND or FROGGATT families, or use the links in the family tree. There are also links to take you back to other family pages at the bottom of this page. Outline of the Yelland family treeThis tree shows only the direct ancestors of John (1811). The YELLAND Family of Dalton - from John (1811)John YELLAND (1811)John was born 26 July 1811 and baptised at All Saints, Rotherham on 25 August 1811. He married Mary BOOTH at Hooton Roberts on 31 December 1832. One witness was Ellen Yelland, John's younger sister.
The first child of John and Mary (BOOTH) was Helen YELLAND, born 1833 and baptised at Conisbrough. Helen (or Ellen) appears to have died in 1838 and was buried at Braithwell, a few miles from Conisbrough and Dalton. Next came William, identified in the 1841 census as being born around 1835 but I cannot find a baptism for him. The third child was Ann YELLAND in 1837, baptised at Hooton Roberts on 17 September 1837. Civil registration of births started in England in July 1837, so it would appear that Ann's birth was just too early to be registered.
It would appear that John YELLAND died shortly after Ann's birth, explaining why there were only 3 children. Mary the widow is in the 1841 census living with Simeon SIMPSON at Conisbrough and William is with his gandparents John and Mary BOOTH. I cannot find Ann; I presume she was fostered out with some other relative.
In the 1851 census Mary has disappeared, William is still with his grandmother Mary BOOTH and this time it is Ann who is with Simeon Simpson where she is described as his niece (confirming that the Mary YELLAND living with Simeon in 1841 is the correct Mary YELLAND.)
In the 1861 census Mary is living in a cottage next to the school house in Hooton Roberts and is a grocery shopkeeper. She finally has her son William living with her. Also living with Mary is her daughter Ann (Mawson) and family, and her (illegitimate) grand-daughter Martha.
I cannot find Mary in the 1871 census. In 1881 she is living with her son William and his family at 4 Deakins Square, Attercliffe, Sheffield. William was a Blacksmith.
In 1891 Mary is living with her granddaughter Alice (now Alice FIELDHOUSE) at 34 Bridge St, Swinton, Rotherham. Mary died 2 years later in 1893 and was buried at St Margarets Swinton on 21 November 1893.
Generation 6William YELLAND (1835)William is presumably the son of John YELLAND and Mary (BOOTH), born around 1835. His birth or baptism is not obvious in the records. The first evidence for William is in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, where there is a William Yelland living with John and Mary BOOTH (his grandparents) - see the census records above. In 1861 he is now a blacksmith, living with his mother at Hooton Roberts. William married Harriet CHARLESWORTH at Darnall, Sheffield on 4 October 1863. Darnall is a suburb in east Sheffield, just southeast of Attercliffe. Harriet had been born at Attercliffe on 28 October 1838 and baptised there on 25 November 1838:
William and Harriet had 6 children:
In 1871 William and Harriet were living at 238 High St, Attercliffe, Sheffield. Their first child George had died in 1864.
Harriet died in Attercliffe in 1879 and was buried on 6 March 1879 at Attercliffe. In the 1881 census William, the widower, has 4 children and his mother at 4 Deakins Square, Attercliffe.
The next records we have for William are court convictions in 1885 and 1886 for "bastardy". It is not clear whether he had fathered two children or was being convicted on having a relationship outside of marriage, Note that William was a widower by this time.
By the time of the 1891 census William had moved to 168 Penistone Rd, Nether Hallam, west Sheffield. perhaps to escape the "bastardy" charges. He was living with his daughter Mary and son William. In 1901 he is still at this address. By 1901 William had retired and was living at 11 Milner Rd, Sheffield, his daughter Mary still with him:
William died in 1921 (Sheffield Dec qtr 9c/801). Ann YELLAND (1837)Ann was born in 1837, in Sheffield according to the census records, and was baptised on 17 September 1837 at St Johns Church, Hooton Roberts. Ann cannot be found in the 1841 census but is in the 1851 census working as a house servant for Simeon Simpson at Conisbrough. Birth of Martha YELLAND Five years after the 1851 census, at 18 years old Ann gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Martha, born on 9 November 1856 at Hooton Roberts. A father was not named on the birth record. Martha was baptised in the local church of Swinton St Margaret on 12 November 1856, Ann's occupation being "spinster".
Marriage to Joseph MAWSON Three years after having Martha, Ann YELLAND married Joseph MAWSON. Ann was aged 22 and Joseph was 21. Joseph had been born in Wath upon Deane in 1840 adn baptised in the local church on 19 April 1840. By this time Ann could sign her name (she signed Martha's birth with an "X") but Joseph could not write. Or so it would seem - The writing style for Ann's "signature" is identical to that of Henry the Curate, so I suspect he filled in the whole form including the X for Joseph. Note that the marriage was by licence rather than by Banns. One of the witnesses was William YELLAND, Ann's brother.
Ann and Joseph MAWSON went on to have 5 children:
In the 1861 census the YELLAND and MAWSON families are living together in a cottage adjacent to the schoolhouse at Hooton Roberts. Mary YELLAND, Ann's mother and Martha's grandmother is a grocery shopkeeper. Martha (aged 4) is living with her mother and step-father but is recorded as "daughter in law".
In the 1871 census: Joseph and Ann MAWSON are in Church St, Swinton, with a "visitor" William TUTILL. Martha is a "visitor" with Richard and Mary TUTILL, presumably Wiliam's parents. I cannot find Mary YELLAND, Ann's mother, in the 1871 census.
In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses: Joseph and Ann MAWSON are in Church St. In 1911 they had moved to 14 New Station Rd, adjacent to the canal. Their son John remained living with them. Ann YELLAND (now Anna MAWSON) died in 1920 and was buried at St Margarets Swinton on 30 November 1920, Plot F3d. She was still living at 14 New Station Rd. Her husband, Joseph Mawson died in 1927 at 62 Carr Hill, Doncaster, but was buried in the same plot as Ann at Swinton on 29 June 1927. (Their son John continued to live at 14 Station Rd until his death in 1937.)
Generation 7John Charlesworth YELLAND (1865)John YELLAND was born in 1865 in Sheffield. He married Ellen PEARSON (a widow) at Sheffield Cathedral on 16 February 1891.
Ellen TRAVIS was born in Sheffield in 1850. She married William Henry PEARSON (a widower) on 10 March 1873 at Pitsmoor. William was a fishmonger, as was his father before him. They had two children (Catherine born 1886) and Ellen (baptised 29 February 1888). William PEARSON died before his daughter was born, being buried on 17 April 1888 at Burngreave, Cemetery, Sheffield. This left Ellen a widow with one daughter (Catherine) and another not yet born (Ellen). Catherine died the following year and was buried at Burngreave Cemetery on 27 March 1889. In the 1891 census a few weeks after their marriage, Ellen and William were living at 393 Penistone Rd, Sheffield,
Ellen's address at the time of their marriage. The have Ellen's young daughter, Ellen, with them. John was 28 and Ellen claimed to
be 38 (but she was born in 1850 so was actually 41). In 1901, they had moved to 18 Shipton St, Sheffield, and Ellen had aged 13
years to now be 51, her correct age. In 1911 hey were living at 117 Holme Lane (which today is occupied by the Travis Perkins
Building Products yard - Travis being Ellen's maiden name). In 1911, Ellen was with her daughter Ellen, now married to Robert EVANS
and living at 45 Limpsfield Rd, Sheffield. John Charlesworth YELLAND died in early 1934 and was buried at Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield on 9 March 1934. Ellen YELLAND (PEARSON/TRAVIS) was living with her daughter Ellen (EVANS)in 1939 at 71 Far Lane, Sheffield. She was recorded as "incapacitated).
Ellen died 9 February 1947 at City General Hospital Sheffield, late of 18 Glen Road. Probate was granted to her daughter Ellen EVANS.
Mary YELLAND (1868)Mary was born 4 March 1868 at Attercliffe to William and Harriet YELLAND. Her mother Harriet died in 1879 and Mary continued to live with her father. Mary remained as William's housekeeper for 35 years. Then, in 1914 she married Joseph BOOTH at Christ Church, Attercliffe. William her father died in 1921. Mary and Joseph had 20 years together before Joseph died in 1934. Mary is in the 1939 Register as a widow and unpaid housekeeper at 48 Heath St, Sheffield. She died in 1948 (Sheffield Dec qtr 2c/75).
Joseph William YELLAND (1872)Joseph William, known in the census records as William, was born in 1872 to William and Harriet YELLAND. He is with his parents in the 1881 and 1891 census records, following in his father's occupation and being a blacksmith's apprentice. In 1901 he is a blacksmith living in Todmorton. After this date Joseph William seems to vanish from the records.
Martha YELLAND (1856)Martha was the illegitimate daughter of Ann YELLAND. She was born on 9 November 1856 at Hooton Roberts. A father was not named on the birth record. Martha was baptised in the local church of Swinton St Margaret on 12 November 1856, Ann was 18 and her occupation was "spinster".
Martha went on to marry Robert FROGGATT on 28 December 1895 at Swinton. Martha and Robert had 5 children. She died in 1889. There is more about Martha and Robert Froggatt's family here.Ellen Elizabeth MAWSON (1860)Ellen Elizabeth was born to Joseph MAWSON and Ann (nee YELLAND) in 1860 at Hooton Roberts. She is listed in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses living with Joseph and Ann. She married Jospeh SCOTT at Swinton on 17 November 1881.
Ellen and Joseph had two children: Joseph in 1883 and Evelina in 1885, but the family did not last long. Joseph died within a few weeks, n mid 1886 and Evelina died a few weeks later in 1886 leaving Joseph a widower. Joseph appears to be in the 1901 census at Mexborough working in the coal mine. There is death for a Joseph Scott of 104 Doncaster Rd, who died 1 June 1906, administratino of his estate to John William SCOTT, miner.
Alice MAWSON (1862)Alice MAWSON was born to Ann and Joseph in 1862 at Hooton Roberts. She is with them in the 1871 census at Church St, Swinton. In 1881 Alice is working as a general servant for Richard Lindley, a draper, at Hope St, Mexborough. Alice married John Fieldhouse at Swinton St Margaret on 25 December 1882. John was a butcher.
Alice and John had six children. Alice died within a few weeks and their 4th child was not named. Ann and Joseph MAWSON went on to have 6 children:
In the 1891 census Alice and family were living at 34 Bridge St, Swinton. Alice's grandmother Mary YELLAND (nee BOOTH) was with
them. John Fieldhouse died in 1905 and was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 19 November 1905, plot number NM30b. He was only 46 years old.
A few years later, Alice married the bootmaker next door at 32 Bridge St, Charles Barry. They married at Swinton St Margaret on 25 December 1918.
At some time after their marriage, Alice and Charles BARRY moved away from Bridge St but the two properties at 32 and 34 Bridge St remained in the Fieldhouse family. In 1939 they were occupied by Alice's sons and grandchildren, still running the butchery.
In 1933 they resided at 143 Station St, Swinton and it was here that Charles died in 1933. He was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 28 August 1933, plot SM3c. Alice remained at Station St and died there in 1939. She was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 20 March 1939 in plot NM30B, the same plot as her first husband John FIELDHOUSE.
John MAWSON (1866-1937)John was born in Swinton in 1866. He remained living with his parents Ann and Joseph MAWSON throughout his life until their deaths. From some time after 1901 they lived at 14 Station Rd (now the Swinton Square shopping mall). John does not appear to have married. He died at 14 Station Road in 1937 and as with his parents was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 21 September 1937 plot E44h.
William MAWSON (1870-)William Mawson was born in 1870. He is in the 1871 and 1881 census records with his parents Ann and Joseph MAWSON. He cannot be
found in the 1891 census.
In the 1939 register they are at 72 Fitzwilliam St. They have a Nellie MAWSON living with them. Nellie was born 1905 to Arthur MAWSON and Sarah Ann (nee MORRIS).
William died at Highfield Farm, Swinton in November 1952 and was buried at Swinton St Margaret on 22 November 1952, in Plot G37b.
