Cruising the Danube from the Black Sea to the North Sea
April-May 2023: Day 34

Newcastle to Durham, UK

Introduction

Monday was a Bank Holiday as part of the Coronation weekend festivities. This was fortunate as there was little traffic in town and few people using the Metro. But as it was also raining, we invested £5 on a taxi to take us to Central Station. Bought tickets and headed off to Newcastle Airport to collect our rental car. It was still raining lightly but we found the rental office in the middle of the car park and soon had the keys to our Citroen C3 Aircross. The rain did not ease up as we headed east to the coast, to find the fabled Whitley Bay. Not easy to negotiate the roads to the beach but we did see the coast and the yellow sands. From Seaton Sluice in the north we headed back to the A1 and then south towards Durham. We stopped at the Washington Service Centre for a coffee and toasted sandwiches (which were surprisingly nice) and then drove to the Premier Inn at Bishop Auckland, still in the rain.
