Cruising the Danube from the Black Sea to the North Sea
April-May 2023: Day 29

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Introduction

Departure Day. We finished packing our bags and departed from the Scenic Jade this morning. It was a short walk to our new hotel - The Hotel MAI, but roadworks confounded the route and Google Maps wanted us to take an alleyway that had a locked gate on it. But we got there eventually and stored our bags. We then walked back to near the Central Station to find a canal cruise. Bumped into the ladies from Te Awamutu! Paid our money and boarded, only to find 6 others from the Scenic Jade already onboard! Later we walked down Damrak to the main square opposite the Palace. From there we veered west and north to find Ann Frank's House. Tickets were impossible to obtain but we only wanted a glimpse of the building anyway. Crowds everywhere gave away the location. We then walked back to the station and checked into the hotel, a quirky place with wonky floors. But interesting art work. Dinner was more of a mission. Although there are many cafes and restaurants in the area, thay all looked cheap and dodgy. We ended up at an Italian place - Piccolo Mondo on the corner of Geldersekade and Bantammerburg. Food and service were excellent.
