From the Pacific to the Atlantic - Crossing Canada by Train 2 October - 5 November 2024
Canada 2024 5 October 2024: Day 5
The "Canadian Train"
Introduction
After picking up a lot of passengers at Edmonton overnight the train was now full and demands on the train staff had increased. There were several large groups on organised tours and this changed the nature of the journey - the dome car was
now always full and meals were more rushed. We continued east onto the prairies. Wheat fields, now fallow after the summer harvest, stretched for mile after mile, punctuated by occasional small towns and large grain elevators - ancient and modern.
We stopped for some time on a siding near a potash mine then proceeded on to Saskatoon. Here the train had to reverse into the station for a short stop before proceeding. We headed out of the station and promptly stopped under a grafitti-labelled overpass for
some time before proceeding. The rest of the day was dominated by immense wheat fields and small farm holdings. By dusk we had passed Melville and soon we passed into Manitoba, our fourth province on this journey.

One of several potash mines - Canada is the world's largest producer. |
As we reversed into Saskatoon we passed this power plant - 3 times |
The Queen Elizabeth Power Station. |
I am sure the Queen was flattered to be associated with the station that uses gas from the adjacent landfill. |
