Ebenezer BENTON was born in the September quarter 1856 to Benjain BENTON the Grocer and his second wife Mary RUDGE. He was their second child.

Marriage to Sarah WOOD: Ebenezer married Sarah Hannah Frances WOOD in mid 1882 at West Ham. I cannot find the parish record, it was not at All Saints, West Ham. Ebenezer and Sarah had nine children:

Death of Sarah and Ebenezer BENTON

Sarah Hannah Frances BENTON (née WOOD) died in Liverpool in the June quarter 1928, aged 69. She was buried at the Manor Park Cemetery, Newham, London on 29 June 1928

Ebenezer Frederick BENTON died a year later in London (June quarter Barnet 3a/481) and was buried with Sarah at manor Park Cemetery on 28 May 1929.

Alice Mary BENTON

Alice Mary was born 28 May 1883. She lived with her parents for many years, eventually marrying Percy Edward RUSH on 20 May 1929 at the Cassland Rd Wesleyan Chapel, Hackney, London. Alice was aged 45 and Percy was 46, a brush maker from Liverpool. They did not have any children.

By 1939 they had moved to 44 Stanton Rd, Bebington, Wirral and Percy worked for a soap and perfume manufacturer.

Alice BENTON died in London in 1941, aged 58. Percy died at Wirral in 1943 aged 61.

Frederick John BENTON

Frederick John was born 18 July 1884 in West Ham. He married Emma Phinetta TRIGGS in 1910 in Portsmouth. Emma had been born in Brighton, Sussex in 1884 to Edward John TRIGGS and Julia POWELL, who had married in Portsmouth in 1883.

In 1911 they were living at 50 Palermo Rd, Harlesden, London NW and Frederick worked as a type founder.

By 1939 Frederick, Emma and the two younger sons were living at 1 Niagara Ave, Ealing. Frederick was still working with typeset, Norman was an official for the Employers Organisation and Percival installed telephones.

Emma Phinetta BENTON died in Ealing in 1952, aged 67. She is buried at the Ealing and Old Brentford Cemetery, Ealing, plot Hh/26M.

Within the year, Frederick had married Florence Annie HIGGS at Portsmouth. Frederick died 26 March 1963 at the Middlesex Hospital, late of 30 Layton Rd Brentford, Middlesex. He was aged 78. Probate of £367 was granted to his widow Florence Annie. Florence died a few years later on 16 October 1981 at the same hospital, aged 92.

Eleanor Frances BENTON

Eleanor Frances was born 10 December 1887 in West Ham. She married John Wilfred CANN on 26 July 1913 at the Cassland Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Lewsham, London.The witnesses included her father Ebenezer.

Eleanor and John had two children before John enlisted in the Army on 12 June 1916. John was killed at the Battle of the Somme on 23 March 1918 and is buried at Pargny British Cemetery, Somme. The War Grave record states "Son of John and Mary Ann Cann, of 39, Cassland Rd., South Hackney, London; husband of Eleanor F. Cann, of 85 Bentham Rd., South Hackney, London."

In late 1925 Eleanor married Charles W LAWRENCE (Hackney 1B/1033). They had a daughter, Margaret E. LAWRENCE born 3 November 1926. In the 1939 Register, Charles, now the district manager for a gas company, was living at Hale St, East India Dock, London. With him were step-sons John and Brian CANN. His wife Eleanor and their daughter Margaret were living at Ashby Villa, Attleborough, Norwich.

Kathleen BENTON

Kathleen was born mid-1892 in Hackney (1b/505). She is recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with her parents. She married George BOWNESS on 9 April 1914 at the Cassland Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Lewsham, London. Kathleen was aged 22. George was a school teacher aged 28. The witnesses included her father Ebenezer.

Kathleen and George had three children, the first born in 1921. George enlisted in the Army in 1916 and was posted to France.

George BOWNESS died Sep quarter 1952 in Hendon, London, aged 67. Kathleen survived him by 20 years, dying 27 Dec 1972 at 14 Woodlands Ave, London..

Margaret Hannah BENTON

Margaret was born 23 September 1896 in Hackney (1b/532). She is recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with her parents. It appears that Margaret never married. She is recorded in the 1939 register as single and a bank clerk (insurance). living in Godstone, Surrey. She later moved to 2/17 Woodville Rd, Bexhill-on-Sea where she died on 10 December 1974. She left an estate valued at £11,534.

Constance Ada BENTON

Constance was born 28 June 1896 in Hackney (1b/588), the youngest child of Ebenezer and Sarah BENTON. She is recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with her parents. Constance married Charles Arthur GLASSPOOL on 12 July 1924 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Cassland Rd Hackney, the same church as her sisters Eleanor and Kathleen.

Constance and Charles appear to have had only one child - Janet GLASSPOOL born 31 January 1935.

1939

Constance died on 19 August 1971 at 49 Squires Lane, Finchley, London, aged 73. Her husband Charles died on 6 July 1974 at the same address, aged 77.
