Marriage to Edward HICKLING

Mary Ellen married Edward HICKLING at the Milton St Baptist Chapel, Nottingham on 12 September 1882.

Nottinghamshire Guardian 15 September 1882

Who was Edward HICKLING?

Edward HICKLING was born in Holloway Derbyshire in 1859, the son of William HICKLING and Mary Ann (STOKES). According to the 1861 census William was a framesmith, born in Beeston. Edward was the fourth of five chilren, their places of birth showing the family frequently moved around. As a framesmith William would build, install or repair stocking frames. By 1881 Edward was working as a lace warehouseman, an industry he stayed in all his working life.

Children of Edward and Nellie HICKLING

Edward and Nellie had six children in Nottingham:

Frank Goodliffe 2 Jul 1883 - 9 Dec 1954
Lillian Maud 18 Dec 1884 - Dec 1972
Leonard Edward 8 Jul 1886 - 9 Dec 1970
Arthur Stanley 4 Jan 1890 - 3 Dec 1965
Henry Donald 18 Nov 1891 - 19 Aug 1917
Eric Arnold 1903 - 7 Dec 1942

By the time of the 1891 census, Edward, Mary and family were living at 14 Annesley Grove, Nottingham. Edward's occupation is given as "Buyer. Lace Warehouse". In 1901 the family was still at 14 Annesley Grove. Edward was now listed as Lace Manufacturer, employed on his own account.

In the 1911 census, Edward, Mary, Lillian and Eric were living at "Sutherland Lodge", Lucknow Drive. This is a substantial residence, designed by the well-known Nottingham archtect T.C. Hine. The move to Sutherland Lodge reflected the wealth being made from the lace trade at this time.

1911 census - Sutherland Lodge, Lucknow St

Sutherland Lodge later Alexandra Lodge

Sutherland Lodge was built between 1881 and 1901, during the major phase of development of Mapperley Park. The first occupant of Sutherland Lodge was Alfred LYMBERY, a Nottingham lace manufacturer. He appears to had the residence built and to have provided the Sutherland Lodge name. Lymbery lived in Sutherlnad Lodge for about 20 years, then moved to a larger residence a short distance away named Beechwood Hall, on Woodborough Rd. At this time Edward HICKLING and family took over Sutherland Lodge, but the sharp downturn of the lace trade in Nottingham after 1918 saw the family move elsewhere. In the 1921 census the property had reverted to its address of 2 Lucknow Drive and was occupied by Otto LINDAUER, a German-born yarn merchant. By 1939 it was occupied by Arthur BROWN, a civil engineer. Later, as with most of he large propertiesin Mapperley Park the residence became institutionalised. Sutherland House was now named "Alexander House" (after the early name of the area) and converted to an old age care facility, until it was closed down in 2024.

Sutherland Lodge was converted to an aged care facility and further accommodation was added to the north end. In 2024 the care facility regulator closed Alexandra Lodge down and it was placed on the market for sale, asking price around £1.25M. Some of the original Victorian architecture and decorations remain, especially the grand entrance hall and staircase.

Lucknow St - today it is known as Alexandra Lodge and has been converted to a residential care facility.

The family was still at Sutherland Lodge in 1916 when son Frank Goodliffe HICKLING was wounded in France, but by 1921 the family had moved to 3 Vickers St, still a substantial residence but reflecting the downturn in the fortunes of the lace trade after the end of the war in 1918.

Lilian Maude GOODLIFFE

Lilian Maude was born in Nottingham on 18 December 1884. She is listed in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with her parents. Lilian did not marry and appears to have lived with her parents for much of her life, until they died in 1939. After her parents died, she remained at the house at 7 Derbyshire Cres until her death in 1972. The 1939 register gives her occupation as typist.

Arthur Stanley HICKLING

Arthur Stanley was born on 4 January 1890 in Nottingham. Arthur trained as a dentist in Glasgow. In the 1911 census he was a dental student boarding at 226 West St, Glasgow. He gained his registration on 15 November 1912. He practiced dentistry for a while at Annesley House, Church St, Tredegar, Wales but all did not go well there as he was arrested for assaulting the court bailiffs who tried to arrest him for rifding a bicycle without a light!

Western Mail, Cardiff 9 January 1914

Soon after his run-in with the law in Wales he joined the army and served as a dental surgeon to the 3rd Indian Army Corps overseas including India and Mesopotamia. He is recorded as returning to Plymouth from Port Said on the ship "Rashgan", arriving on 15 September 1919. He gave his home address as 249 Woodborough Rd, Nottingham.

Arthur then set up a dental practice in London, living at 56 Gipsy Hill, Norwood, London where he is recorded in the electoral rolls for 1925 through to 1935.

To London and marriage

It is not clear what Arthur did between his return from Mesopotamia and his move to London but he must have been in London by 1920 as this is when he married Lillian BINKS at Paddington, London in 1920. Lillian was born in York, Yorkshire on 28 July 1896 to Charles BINKS and Esther Richardson KING, who had married in York in 1890. Charles subsequently moved to Nottingham where he ran a factory making bicycles, living a block away from the Hickling household. However the Bink family moved to Eccles, Lancashire by the time of the 1911 census. Perhaps Lillian's time in Nottingham was enough for her and Arthur to become acquainted. Arthur and Lilian HICKLING (not to be confused with Lillian HICKLING, Arthur's sister) lived at 56 Gipsy Hill, but later moved to 72 Harold Road, Norwood, which they shared with Lilian's mother (Esther) and sister (Winifred). They retained their right to vote at 56 Gipsy Hill, suggesting they owned this property or Arthur retained his practice there.

Arthur and Lilian had three children:

Jean 28 May 1921 - 1981
Barbara 2 Nov 1922 - 27 Oct 1986
George 21 Oct 1931 - 2007

In the 1921 census Arthur and Lillian with daughter Jean were living at 56 Gipsy Hill. Arthur was a dental surgeon working from home - i.e. his surgery was at 56 Gipsy Hill.

1921 census for Arthur Hickling at 56 Gipsy Hill, London

56 Gipsy Hill Rd, Norwood, London, probably where Arthur had his dental practice.

In the 1939 register Arthur and two of their children were living with Lilian's mother and sister (Esther and Winifred BINKS) at 72 Harold Rd, Croydon. Lilian was a patient at 103 South Side, Clapham Common, London - this was the South London Hospital for Women and Children. Their youngest, son George, was elsewhere, apparently evacuated from London yo live with a family in

1939 register for George Hickling living with Erith and Gladys POOLE at 49 Freshfield Rd, Brighton. It is likely that George had been evacuated from London under the Operation Pied Piper scheme.

There is little more in the records for Arthur or Lilian until 1965 when Arthur died in Orpington Hospital, London on 3 December 1965. His address was given as 51 Oakdene Road, Sevenoaks, Kent.

lilian remained at Sevenoaks, moving into an early version of a retirement home complex - Rockdale House - at Sevenoaks. She died there on 25 March 1984.

Henry (Harry) Donald HICKLING (1891-1917)

Henry HICKLING was born on 18 November 1891 in Nottingham. He is with the family in the 1901 census, but then emigrated to Mirror, Alberta, Canada in 1910 where he became a farmer. Henry, also known as Harry, enlisted in the Canadian Army on 31 January 1916 and after basic training he sailed for England on 22 August 1916. From Witley Camp in England he proceeded to France on 13 December 1916 and joined the Canadian 50th Battalion.

Later in 1916, after his enlistment, Henry married Cecilia May ECCLESHALL in Lacombe, Alberta. Cecilia had been born in USA to William Eccleshall and Emma MALINS. Henry and Cecilia had one child - Harry Donald - born 17 July (probably 1917 but other records suggest 1916) in Alberta.

Henry Donald (Harry) was killed in the battle of Lens on 19 August 1917 and buried in the Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France.

After Henry's death, Cecilia was with her parents at Red Deer, Alberta in the 1921 census. There is little information for the next years until 1940 when she and son Harry were living at 108 17th Ave East. Later she befriended George BRYANT, a mechanic and chauffeur. In 1957 they were living at 108 17th Ave SE. Cecilia died in Calgary in 1986. She is buried with George at Burnsland Cemetery, Calgary.

Eric Arnold HICKLING (1903-1942)

Eric was born in Nottingham in 1903. He is shown with the family in the 1911 census.

Eric marrried Norah Winifred HOBSON in Nottingham in 1928.

Eric became a seaman, earning his Second Mate ticket:

Eric Arnold was in the Merchant Navy during the war. He was Chief Officer (second in command) on the vessel Waiwera that was torpedoed and sunk off the Azores on 29 June 1942. The Waiwera was on a voyage from New Zealand and Australia to England. Captain Andrews and Eric Hickling guided two of the life boats, with ninety seven survivors, in bad weather through four days and nights until they were rescued by a Norwegian vessel. The Chief Engineer and eight others went down with the ship. The large Shaw Savill & Albion liner was sunk by the Type VIIC U-754 (Kapitanleutnant Johannes Oestermann) who was herself destroyed a month later when she was caught on the surface by a Hudson aircraft out from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in a position South-East of Cape Sable. Taken by surprise, the U-Boat was unable to dive before coming under attack from the RCAF aircraft and she was ultimately destroyed with all hands.

For their actions in rescuing most of the crew, Captain Andrews and Eric Hickling were awarded the OBE (Civil Division) by the King and the Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea.

Unfortunately, Eric's luck did not hold. On his next ship he was lost at sea, presumed drowned when the Ceramic was sunk by enemy action on 7th December 1942. Eric was the 1st Mate.

Eric Arnold and Nora Winifred had one daughter, Patricia Ann born 1931. Patricia married Valentine Vigne WALKER in 1955 and they had three children.

Although Norah's address at the time of Eric's death is given as Worstead, Norfolk, she is in the 1948 & 1950 phone book at 11a Hawton Cres, Wollaton Park, Nottingham. This is also the address for Eric in the probate record in 1943.

In the 1955 phone book, Norah appears to have returned to Norfolk, being at Grange Farm House, Worstead, North Walsham.

Norah Winifred died in North Walsham in November 1989.
