The BEER Family of Yarcombe, Stockland and Membury, DevonThis is the story of the family of Benjamin BEER of Yarcombe in Devon. It traces the family down to Jane BEER, who on 29 March 1892, departed from London on the ship JELUNGA bound for Queensland Australia. She was contracted to disembark at Bowen, Queensland. She is listed as a Domestic Servant, aged 25 and single. Jane arrived in Bowen on 20 May 1892. married Samuel BROWN on 17 June 1893 in Bowen, Queensland. They had two children (William and Selina) before Sam disappeared, never to be heard from again. (Sam's story is here.) Soon after, Jane joined up with Charles TAYLOR and they had eight children. (Jane's story is told here.) The family of Benjamin BEER (1716-1778) and Ann STAMPBenjamin was baptised in the church of St John Baptist in Yarcombe on 4 November 1716. Twenty-four years later he married Anne STAMP in the church at Stockland on 4 May 1746. Anne was baptised on 12 Feb 1720 at Upottery, a few miles across the valley from Stockland. Although there are other baptisms for an Anne STAMP in the region this one is the mostly as her next two siblings were baptised in Upottery before the family moved to Stockland where another four children were baptised.

Five children can be identified in the registers, all at Stockland but the gap between Jacob (1754) and Grace and John (twins born 1762) suggests there should have been other births, The family of their son Jacob was the line that Jane BEER descends from. Isaac BEER 1840-1909Isaac was born in 1840 in Yarcombe, Devon. In the 1841 census Isaac is 9 months old, and living with parents Isaac and Ruth BEER, at the Yarcombe Inn, Yarcombe. Only 10 years later he is a farm servant for James SPILLER at Broadly Farm, Yarcombe. In 1861 he is an Agricultural Labourer, living at Staple Fitzpaine, near Taunton, about 8 miles north of Yarcombe.
