30 May 2025: Day 10
Robe to Mt Gambier to Melbourne
Introduction
An early start was needed as we had a long way to drive to reach Melbourne. The hotel did not serve breakfasts but reviews told us of a local cafe - found it adjacent to
the laundomat but it was closed this day. The cafe on the main road was the only one open. From Robe we headed southeast to Mt Gambier then east to Hamilton and Dunkeld. Google maps took us
on some minor roads that she claimed were quicker, but we found then in poorer condition.Eventually we joined the M8 highway at Ballarat and then, with increasing volumes of traffic, we
navigated to Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine in order to drop offt he rental car. That done we found the Skybus into Melbourne city.
Mt Gambier
Mt Gambier is a rarity in Australia, it is an actual mountain, not very high, but nonetheless a mountain. What is more it is, or was, a volcano. The volcanic complex is about 6,000
years old and is a series of craters, tuff cones and maars, or explosion craters. Blocks of the the underlying limestone are found within the volcanic scoria cones. The craters are
today filled with water, forming an important local resource.
