Orkney & Shetland 2019 - Day 17

Westray back to Kirkwall and the overnight ferry to Shetland

Introduction

Another pleasant day which started out quite cool. We watched the seals sunbathing and swimming around the kelp beds then decided to try the coffee at Rendall's General Store. They had opened a small cafe in the back a year earlier - "Groatie Buckie's". The name comes from the local term for the small white cowrie shells found on Orkney beaches. Each table had a small jar of these shells for good luck. It worked, their coffee and scones were surprisingly good. Later we headed south across Westray, checked the puffins again at Castle O"Burrian (they ahd all gone fisheding) then arrived in Rapness in time for the late afternoon ferry back to Kirkwall, where we found dinner (eventually) before queueing up for the overnight ferry to Shetland.
