The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, Rutland

Thomas RICHMOND (1816- ) Second son of Elizabeth Goodliffe and Thomas Richmond

Thomas was born on 29 March 1816 (according to the information in the IGI) in Barrowden in the County of Rutland. He married Mary and they had two children, Thomas Kerfoot Richmond born Jun 1841 and Samuel Goodliff Richmond born Dec 1842, both in Kings Cliffe.  Thomas and Mary appear to be in the 1841 census in Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire:

Finding their marriage record is not easy. The 1841 census record has Elizabeth KERFOOT living with them, and son Thomas is 2 months old. This suggests they married in 1840 or earlier, and Mary's maiden name was probably Kerfoot. The only marriage record available that fits is in Sept quarter 1840 in Marylebone, London where Thomas Richmond and a Mary Culpin Kerfoot are listed on the same page. Why did they marry in London when all other family events are in Rutland or Kings Cliffe? The middle name of CULPIN is a further clue perhaps, as Elizabeth Goddliffe's sister Anna married a John CULPIN in Rutland around 1830.

But Thomas and Mary disappear. They are not in any later census. In 1851 the two sons are living with grandparents, shown as John and Elizabeth CUNNINGTON in Workhouse Lane, Kings Cliffe. It would appear that Elizabeth KERFOOT had  remarried to John CUNNINGTON in Jun 1842 (Oundle 15/413) :

 In 1861, Samuel is an ag. labourer still living in Workhouse Lane with his grandparents, Thomas is now apprenticed to a tailor living in Crown Lane, Stamford:

By 1871, Thomas K. has vanished, he may have emigrated to Canada.
Samuel had married Jane POWELL on 11 March 1865, in St Lukes, Chelsea, London. Jane had been born in South Wales in 1842 to David Powell and Mary (nee Williams):

In 1871 Samuel, Jane and children George Goodliff and Rebecca Louisa are in 25 Oakleigh St, Lambeth, London:

Some time between 1871 and July 1875 the family migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, where another two children were born:
