Edward and Mary Ellen died within a few weeks of each other - Edward on 25 February and Mary on 5 May 1939. At the time of their deaths they were living at 7 Derbyshire Cresent, off Wollaton Rd. Their estates for probate were valued at £44 and £10 respectively. Administration in both cases was to their oldest son Frank Goodliffe HICKLING. The children of Edward and Mary Ellen HICKLING

Frank Goodliffe HICKLING - Antoinette BANCROFT

Frank was born in Nottingham in 1883. He married Antoinette BANCROFT in 1910 in Nottingham. In the 1901 census, Antoinette was living with her family at 32 Coppice Road, Mapperley, Nottingham. Her father was a lace manufacturer.

In 1911 they were living at 2 Tavistock Ave, Nottingham, a short distance away from Lucknow Cres where Frank's parents were living.

1911 census

Frank and Antoinette had two children: a son Peter Frank, born in early 1914 and a daughter Evelyn born in 1919.

Frank and family later moved to 11 Thyra Grove, Nottingham, just off Woodborough Rd:

Peter Frank HICKLING joined the Air Force, becoming a Squadron Leader in 218 Squadron. He was awarded the DFM. He was killed in action on 9 November 1942 but this was not reported in the Nottingham Evening Post until 9 April 1943. He is buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.

Evelyn HICKLING was born 19 September 1919 in Nottingham. She married Fricis IEVINS in 1952 in Basford. They had 3 sons, born in Nottingham. Evelyn died in North Walsham, Norfolk in 1999 age 79. Fricis died a year later in March 2000 aged 76.

Lilian Maude GOODLIFFE

Lilian Maude was born in Nottingham on 18 December 1884. She is listed in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with her parents. Lilian did not marry and appears to have lived with her parents for much of her life, until they died in 1939. After her parents died, she remained at the house at 7 Derbyshire Cres until her death in 1972. The 1939 register gives her occupation as typist.

Leonard Edward HICKLING

Leonard was born in Nottingham on 8 July 1886. He is in the 1901 census living with his parents at 14 Annesley Grove.

Leonard married Daisy Ethel NOBLE in Nottingham in 1908. In the 1911 census they were living with Daisy's parents, Tom and Elizabeth NOBLE at 422 Woodborough Rd, Nottingham.

But they soon moved and in the 1912 Wrights Directory, they were at 2 Tavistock Drive. In 1916, 1920 and 1922 directorries they had moved to 14 Tavistock Dr and Leonoard was now a lace manufacturer (Edward Hickling & Co). By 1939 they had moved to 660 Western Boulevard, with Daisy's widowed sister-in-law.

I cannot find any children for Leonard and Daisy.

Leonard died on 9 December 1970 and Daisy on 22 May 1972, both at 67 Nottingham Rd, Nottingham. Leonard and Daisy are buried at Church (Rock) Cemetery, Nottingham, plot St Pauls/11421. Also buried in this plot are Daisy's parents Tom Richard Speed NOBLE and Elizabeth Ann NOBLE (née WOODHOUSE), who had died in 1927 and 1947 respectively.

Arthur Stanley HICKLING

Arthur Stanley was born on 4 January 1890 in Nottingham. Arthur trained as a dentist in Glasgow. In the 1911 census he was a dental student boarding at 226 West St, Glasgow. He gained his registration on 15 November 1912. He practiced dentistry for a while at Annesley House, Church St, Tredegar, Wales but all did not go well there as he was arrested for assaulting the court bailiffs..

Western Mail, Cardiff 9 January 1914

Soon after his run-in with the law in Wales he joined the army and served as a dental surgeon to the 3rd Indian Army Corps overseas including India and Mesopotamia. He is recorded as returning to Plymouth from Port Said on the ship "Rashgan", arriving on 15 September 1919. He gave his home address as 249 Woodborough Rd, Nottingham.

Arthur then set up a dental practice in London, living at 56 Gipsy Hill, Norwood, London where he is recorded in the electoral rolls for 1925 through to 1935.

It is not clear what Arthur did between his return from Mesopotamia and his move to London but he must have been in London by 1920 as this is when he married Lilian BINKS at Paddington, London in 1920. Lilian was born in York, Yorkshire on 28 July 1896 to to Charles BINKS and Esther Richardson KING, who had married in York in 1890. Charles subsequently moved to Nottingham where he ran a factory making bicycles, living a block away from the Hickling household. However the Bink family moved to Eccles, Lancashire by the time of the 1911 census. Perhaps Lilian's time in Nottingham was enough for her and Arthur to become acquainted. Arthur and Lilian HICKLING (not to be confused with Lilian HICKLING, Arthur's sister) lived at 56 Gipsy Hill, but later moved to 72 Harold Road, Norwood, which they shared with Lilian's mother (Esther) and sister (Winifred). They retained their right to vote at 56 Gipsy Hill, suggesting they owned this property or Arthur retained his practice there.

72 Harold Rd, Norwood, London.

Arthur and Lilian had three children:

Jean 1921-1981
Barbara 1922-1986
George 1931-2007

In the 1939 register Arthur and two of their children were living at 72 Harold St, Norwood. Lilian and one child were elsewhere. It appears that Lilian HICKLING was a patient at 103 South Side, Clapham Common, London - this was the South London Hospital for Women and children. It is likely that Lilian's third child was with her in the hospital but the record is closed.

There is little more in the records for Arthur or Lilian until 1965 when Arthur died in Orpington Hospital, London on 3 December 1965. His address was given as 51 Oakdene Road, Sevenoaks, Kent.

lilian remained at Sevenoaks, moving into an early version of a retirement home complex - Rockdale House - at Sevenoaks. She died there on 25 March 1984.

Henry Donald HICKLING

Henry Hickling was born on 18 November 1891 in Nottingham. He is with the family in the 1901 census, but then emigrated to Mirror, Alberta, Canada in 1910 where he became a farmer. Henry, also known as Harry, enlisted in the Canadian Army on 31 January 1916 and after basic training he sailed for England on 22 August 1916. From Witley Camp in England he proceeded to France on 13 December 1916 and joined the Canadian 50th Battalion. He was killed in the battle of Lens on 19 August 1917 and buried in the Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France.

Later in 1916, after his enlistment, Henry married Cecilia May ECCLESHALL in Lacombe, Alberta. Cecilia had been born in USA to William Eccleshall and Emma MALINS. Henry and Cecilia had one child - Harry Donald - born 17 July (probably 1917 but other records suggest 1916) in Alberta. After Henry's death, Cecilia was with her parents at Red Deer, Alberta in the 1921 census. There is little information for the next years until 1940 when she and son Harry were living at 108 17th Ave East. Later she befriended George BRYANT, a mechanic and chauffeur. In 1957 they were living at 108 17th Ave SE. Cecilia died in Calgary in 1986. She is buried with George at Burnsland Cemetery, Calgary.

Henry and Cecilia's son Harry Donald joined the RCMP and was posted to several parts of Canada. He married Carol JENKINS around 1950 and they had three children. Harry died in Nanaimo BC on 19 Octobe 2002.

Eric Arnold HICKLING

Eric was born in Nottingham in 1903. He is shown with the family in the 1911 census.

Eric marrried Norah Winifred HOBSON in Nottingham in 1928:

Eric became a seaman, earning his Second Mate ticket:

Eric Arnold was in the Merchant Navy during the war. He was Chief Officer (second in command) on the vessel Waiwera that was torpedoed and sunk off the Azores on 29 June 1942. The Waiwera was on a voyage from New Zealand and Australia to England. Captain Andrews and Eric Hickling guided two of the life boats, with ninety seven survivors, in bad weather through four days and nights until they were rescued by a Norwegian vessel. The Chief Engineer and eight others went down with the ship. The large Shaw Savill & Albion liner was sunk by the Type VIIC U-754 (Kapitanleutnant Johannes Oestermann) who was herself destroyed a month later when she was caught on the surface by a Hudson aircraft out from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in a position South-East of Cape Sable. Taken by surprise, the U-Boat was unable to dive before coming under attack from the RCAF aircraft and she was ultimately destroyed with all hands.

For their actions in rescuing most of the crew, Captain Andrews and Eric Hickling were awarded the OBE (Civil Division) by the King and the Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea.

Unfortunately, Eric's luck did not hold. On his next ship he was lost at sea, presumed drowned when the "Ceramic" was sunk by enemy action on 7th December 1942. Eric was the 1st Mate.

Eric Arnold and Nora Winifred had one daughter, born 1931.

Although Norah's address at the time of Eric's death is given as Worstead, Norfolk, she is in the 1948 & 1950 phone book at 11a Hawton Cres, Wollaton Park, Nottingham. This is also the address for Eric in the probate record in 1943.

In the 1955 phone book, Norah appears to have returned to Norfolk, being at Grange Farm House, Worstead, North Walsham.

Norah Winifred died in North Walsham in November 1989.
