was started in B.S.G. I was the 9th member. There was a good selection of books, classes by Edwin Patchett, Edmund Hart, and Benjamin Hawkridge and other young men and lads were members. Some of us used to do a bit of the oratorical business, rather of the high falutin style. My weakness was to attempt too many subjects, and stick to, or be thorough in none. Old Edmund Hart, used to come, and call as he went by, to interest me in astronomy. Then several young fellows formed a Mutual Improvement class, for discussion at the schoolroom. One evening the subject was “Gravitation”. One of the members was seeking to enlighten us as to its laws, and why bodies fell to the earth, and to illustrate his theory threw up the snuffers, asking why they descended again. Just as they came bang on the table the old Deacon came
