well stored mind enabled her, upon religious and social questions, and to
some extent political questions, to enter into conversation with zest.
Several intelligent men and ministers spoke of her as possessing
conversational powers which enabled her to take part in discussions upon
ordinary questions. A young intelligent Independent minister who often
came to preach on a week night at the Lodge, on one occasion, found a
Baptist Magazine on the table. It led him to make an inquiry about the
Baptists when to his surprise he found she was a Baptist. They fell into
a warm discussion upon the subject. Of course the old proverb was proved
true:- “Convince a man against his will, he is of the same opinion
still.” I expect they retired from the contest each claiming the
victory. I am pretty sure my mother would, for she was well posted up in
